Post Wire Extension Solder Error

Hi,
I attempted to solder my Stepper wire to marginally thicker wire (.3 mm thicker) and blew out one of the polarshield stepper shields in the process. I am not sure why this happened as it was 300v wire. This also happened with my adafruit motorshield.

I have now purchased awg 24 wire which is slightly thinner than the stuff I previously used in my extension attempt, but I am worried that I will burn out the shield once again. Any thoughts as to why this is happening or solutions would be greatly helpful.

Yes, I have had everything unplugged during the process and am using polargraphSD power supply and parts.

Thanks,
Erik

Erik, I'm 100% positive that the size of the wire has got nothing to do with the problem. It just can't. Can you share some pics of the work, to give us something to work with?

If you click "Reply" in the blue button below, then you get the ability to attach pictures.

My guess is there's a short somewhere. Extending the cables like you describe is common (though not necessarily the best way of doing it - for long-term use).

The cable that I use has 24 awg conductors (http://uk.farnell.com/klasing/05091504-01-50m/ribbon-cable-4-way-50m-24awg-500v/dp/150427?selectedCategoryId=&exaMfpn=true&categoryId=&searchRef=SearchLookAhead). I think the motors themselves might have slightly thinner conductors - but not significantly.

Hi..i do not have much experience related to your problem but i think the fault is there in your system where you are connecting the wire. Also use the wire of high capacity than the required. It should be of double capacity. Check any earthing or short in your device.

Hello, I think the size of the wire has little to do with the problem. You can try it with a wire higher than the required capacity.
